Following her mother’s death, McCurdy changed her trajectory and grew to resent her career, feeling ashamed of previous roles.Īnother key figure who’s not part of the new project, this one behind the scenes, is original showrunner Schneider. On her other podcast, “Empty Inside,” McCurdy has described her acting career as “hellish,” and referred to both the pressures of the business in general and “the particular toxicity of the environments that I was in.”Īt age 6 or 7, McCurdy’s mother introduced her to acting, and she eventually became the primary financial support for her family. In a February 2021 episode of her podcast “Fish Out of Water,” McCurdy said that she quit acting a few years ago because it was not initially her idea to become an actress. McCurdy, whose character was beloved for her butter socks, sarcastic one-liners, and blatant disrespect for authority, will not be returning to the new series. Nickelodeon veteran Trainor continued to work with the network on shows such as “Wendell and Vinnie” and “T.U.F.F. Kress started a podcast called “RadioActive Dads,” exploring parenting and his budding family. Cosgrove, who pursued a psychology degree at USC, voiced the role of Margo in the “Despicable Me” franchise. McCurdy’s character, Sam, starred in Nickelodeon spinoff “Sam & Cat” with Ariana Grande - who played scatterbrained redhead Cat Valentine in the network’s series “Victorious” - but it lasted for only one year.įollowing “iCarly,” the cast took different paths. Plus, a review of the incisive, revealing documentary about Ren & Stimpy.Cosgrove’s breakthrough Nickelodeon role was as the mischievous, brilliant little sister, Megan, on “Drake & Josh,” to whom she pays homage in the reboot. No matter what you like to watch on Nickelodeon, their new slate will have you covered.įor more on the fun, family network, check out this incredible Avatar: The Last Airbender steelbook blu-ray. In a modern twist on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Young Dylan begins with the titular rapper moving in with his more affluent aunt and uncle, his streetwise sensibilities clashing with their more buttoned-up vibes.Īnd what's getting renewed? Some of your favorite returning and spin-off series, including a second season for Are You Afraid of the Dark?, an expanded season one for All That, and a third season for Blue’s Clues & You! Plus: A Christmas film from The Loud House world, a Henry Danger spin-off series, and a series based on the bestselling books Big Nate. We'll also be getting Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, a live-action series centered on real-life hip-hop sensation "Young" Dylan Gilmer from the prolific producer. Howard teased at the unique direction for the series, saying that Nickelodeon "wanted to take big creative swings with us on this series and that’s incredibly exciting." It comes from Imagine Kids+Family, the family-centered imprint from Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's production company. The Astronauts is a live-action series about a group of kids who are - whoops! - accidentally shot into space, and are forced into a series of intergalactic adventures. There are also some brand-new, original series coming to the network. The series will follow a ten-year-old SpongeBob alongside all of your favorite characters during one fateful summer at Kamp Koral, where they'll be "building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest." Your mileage may vary vis-a-vis "CG SpongeBob," but I gotta say - as a long-time fan of the series and its many spin-off iterations, this sounds charming as all heck. Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years comes to Nickelodeon July of 2020, with 13 episodes of CG-animated glory, all with the original voice cast (including Tom Kenny in the title role). And then after you get to hear an interview with the playwright with one of our NNT staff, so that's also really cool. And I think that feels unique to just hitting record all at once and doing it live, but it's been really fun. People talking, ordering drinks, maybe some music, maybe some sort of glassware clinking or whatever. The first one that we released, Walking Red. So it's got lots of layers of sound and the sound is the thing that really is helping us sort of establish location when you're not in person. And we record all the actors, we record on zoom, but they record locally and then send their recordings to our TD, Peter Morrow. Like the old radio play with like, sound effects and stuff like that. And then the play itself, we record like it is sort of radio. So before the play even starts, you'll hear a little bit of an introduction from Rhiana Yazi, our artistic director. Yeah, so what's been really exciting is that we are getting to play in the podcast format. We've released one and we're getting, ramping up into releasing about another four and then one each month.Īnd what's different about these audio plays versus just hit and record to a stage play? But so what we're releasing now is the first from the very first 10 minute play festival. And so we would have our dramaturge work with the playwrights and make any changes that needed to happen for audio format, et cetera. Right around the time I was hired at New Native Theater, they had started to record these 10 minute plays that we had done in person at the festival as audio plays. I spoke with Sara Pillatzki, artistic associate for New Native Theater. And now, audio plays from their past National Native American 10 Minute Play Festivals are being released as podcasts. It hosted play festival, workshops and more. New Native Theater was up to the challenge. When COVID hit, theaters went dark, but the show must go on, so to speak. Here's reporter Leah Lemm with the story. Coming up, audio plays are coming your way thanks to New Native Theater and the National Native American 10 minute play's festivals of years past. The Allies for instance have a colorful ensemble like US President Dugan (Ray Wise) and Special Agent Tanya Adams (Kari Wuhrer), which the Soviets more than compensate with the likes of Premier Romanov (Nicholas Worth) and the infamous Yuri (Udo Kier) in all his entertainingly villainous stride this isn’t even getting to Gen. Then there’s the introduction of co-operative missions set amidst the conflict – three for the Allies and two for the Soviets, scattered over several maps – that can be played with a friend through LAN or online while rather rudimentary, it showcase just what was possible.Īt the same time, not only are there significantly more in the way of FMVs and CG cutscenes (close to an hour’s worth of footage), but also a larger cast to accompany them, featuring a number of character actors and B-movie stars. The missions themselves are made even more varied, dynamic (with a number of missions having battlefields expand in scope) and successively challenging, with the myriad objectives, side goals and hidden secrets alone (such as bonus crates, usually found by blowing up certain structures) adding quite a bit of replayability in addition to helping ease you into the new features and units, as an added touch the after-mission timer and statistics from Red Alert return, now coming with a post-script that changes depending on how you perform. You take up the role of either a rising Soviet officer at the spearhead of the invasion of America, or a newly minted field commander tasked with stopping said invasion and taking the fight back to the Commies, the entirely linear storyline quickly diverging for each side. The campaign mode further builds upon this curious turn of events over of the course of 24 missions – each faction having 12, not including the two “Boot Camp” training levels or the co-operative missions – and it is here that the changes grow more apparent. All the while Yuri plots behind the scenes, with more ambitious and insidious motives in mind. Thus, begins the Third World War, fought with even more powerful and fantastical weapons, along with far higher stakes than before. When it becomes clear that his plans could no longer be kept hidden, he and Yuri orchestrate a full-scale invasion of American soil (complete with a large-scale tank assault from Mexico) and sabotage the US nuclear arsenal, to President Michael Dugan’s utter shock. With the aid of his increasingly trusted adviser – a powerful psychic named Yuri, said to be Stalin’s prodigy – the USSR spends the intervening time rearming and strengthening itself while once more spreading Communism. Beneath the friendly façade and lip service to peace, however, the Premier is revealed to be an avowed Communist and deeply resents what the Allies had done to his beloved Motherland. On behalf of the Allied Nations, the United States had propped up a man named Alexander Romanov to ultimately lead a seemingly defanged Soviet Union. 20 years have passed since the end of World War II and the death of Josef Stalin. This is in part due to how it all but defined the franchise as it’s remembered to this day.įollowing the precedent of using “good guy” outcomes as canon, the game takes place in broadly the same timeline as Red Alert 1’s Allied ending, the gist of which is first conveyed through the rather creative installation screen. Not only would it become a classic in its own right, but also become among the most defining titles in RTS and PC gaming at large. Before long, though, it would rival if not usurp its classic predecessor. Mainly developed by Westwood Pacific in collaboration by the main branch – the latter at the time busy with various other projects – it built upon the popularity of the first game. That entry is Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2, released on October 2000. It wasn’t until 2000, however, following the releases of Tiberian Sun and its expansion Firestorm, that a proper sequel to Red Alertwas revealed to the public. This marked a new chapter in the history of those developers and the Command and Conquer franchise. Eleven days before the release of Red Alert: Retaliation in 1998, Westwood Studios, along with sister/subsidiary company Burst Games (AKA, Westwood Pacific) were acquired by EA from Virgin Interactive. It can be shallow fun at times, but it’s difficult not to enjoy the sheer thrill of watching Sonic teleport through airwaves or be shot from a giant handgun. Every classic level recreation adds welcome twists and gimmicks. The sheer love and dedication shines through in the craft of Sonic Mania. The difference is that Sonic’s past hasn’t been celebrated quite like this. Green Hill zone itself has seen countless revisits and remixes over the years. Who can forget the sight of Sonic drowning in Chemical Plant Zone’s pink acid? The trick would be much more effective, though, if the Sonic series hadn’t spent the best part of 15 years celebrating its own past on many occasions. It’s a great trick, capitalising on the warm nostalgia of favourite old levels, and also the familiar dread of where many 90s Sonic players met their end. Very familiar Green Hills they are too, as Sonic Mania is in part a greatest hits package, with most of the levels being remixes of stages from the original Mega Drive games. All the player has to do is watch in wonder as Sonic spins and dashes through corkscrews and pipes, flies up into Sega-blue skies and rushes down green hills. For every tricky series of precision leaps and enemy-filled gauntlets, Sonic Mania rewards players with breathless rushes where the blue blur’s momentum takes care of everything. The secret is to embrace the lack of control. Over the years he’s been too twitchy, or too stubborn too heavy, or too floaty and always too eager to fall off the nearest ledge into the abyss below. He’s a hedgehog that runs fast, so naturally it’s a tricky feat to accomplish. One of the problems that Sonic games have had in the near two-decades since the last great one is making him fun to control. The player guides Sonic, Tails and Knuckles across two-dimensional rollercoaster levels (sorry, “zones”) made in the style of the Mega Drive originals and full of loops, springs and spike traps. All those horrid secondary characters we’ve grown to hate over the years are nowhere to be seen, save for a couple of cameos that only hardcore Sonic fans will even recognise such as the cast of Sonic Championship. If the 90s had never ended, Sonic Mania is the follow-up we would have had instead of making do playing Big the Cat fishing mini-games in Sonic Adventure. After years of ill-thought out additions - werehogs, treasure hunts, royal love interests, even the third-dimension was arguably a stretch too far - it has taken an officially endorsed fan-game to recapture the essence of what made Sonic the only real challenge to Mario’s platforming crown all those years ago. After Sonic the Hedgehog and its Mega Drive sequels captured the imaginations of school kids around the world in 1991, the development studio behind the character hasn’t quite been able to find the magic formula that made the original game such a hit.
